A message from the PEA Vice-President

Hello PEA,

Andrea Turner expressed in her letter to all City employees today, “Directors are working closely with the office of human resources and the Mayors office to reassign employees to perform needed City services for our residents.” We think this provides an opportunity for our out of work members.

At this point we don’t have any details, we don’t know how many opportunities might be available, but best case scenario, PEA members who are willing to do tasks outside of their typical job duties would have the opportunity to continue working and preserve their leave balances.
We would like to create a list of members that we can present to labor relations early next week. If you are interested please contact your steward and provide them your contact information.

Stewards: Please communicate this with your members and keep track of who is willing to work in other areas. We will be contacting you for this information.

Thank you,

Justine Roe
PEA Vice President

Our members want regular updates from PEA leadership. Specifically, how is PEA fighting to preserve our jobs, benefits, and leave balances during this furlough? Has PEA signed the MOA? Is PEA standing with AFSCME? Drafting its own letter? What are the other duties that might be assigned? Why have we not been given the opportunity to work from home?

Please communicate early and often with membership. And fight like hell!

I am very frustrated with PEA’s work around these negotiations. We are receiving no information about how PEA is fighting for its members, while other unions are actively mobilizing members to advocate for workers’ rights. I am not interested in being reassigned – I have plenty of work related to my job. I am interested in PEA working to support staff ability to work from home. Several colleagues and I emailed Regina earlier today to get more information and have had no response. I hope this is because PEA members are in negotiations for better time off conditions for staff. PEA, please be more communicative about how you are supporting us and tell us how we can help you. Here is what we need:

1. We have work to do from home. We would like the opportunity to continue working from home.
2. Those who don’t have work from home should still receive a paycheck, and can be assigned work to do from home.
3. We should be compensated during the time we have been off and our sick/vacation balances returned to their previous state.
4. No healthcare should be taken away from anyone during this time.
5. There should be no layoffs during this time.

Please do not sign the MOA without communicating with your membership, and please update us soon.
